| Summary: | The rapid progress of technology in the field of office machines and computers, affords a new opportunity for banks to reorganise their working systems. In recent years punched-card equipment has made long strides in bank methods as a substitute for office and accounting machines, and now a variety of electronic applications are speedily gaining ground. This fluid situation raises complex problems of organisation and costs, which can only be solved by systematic planning and which involve weighty policy decisions. The present work has a two-fold purpose: (a) It outlines the sort of coordinated planning necessary to reach the best decisions and shows that these can, in general, only be obtained by the use of a large digital electronic computer; (b) The author defines the type of information on which planning should be based.
