description India is a vast country that is growing even faster. Particularly over the last decade, there has been a sudden spurt in the construction activity in the country, especially in the large low-to-moderate seismic regions of the country. But, no systems are in place to regulate these massive constructions to ensure seismic safety. This paper raises the challenges in the current practice and provides measures to overcome them. In particular, the paper argues for separate provisions for the design and construction of structures in low-tomoderate seismic regions.
