description Abstract                                                                                              This study aims at identifying the reasons and factors that lead to the poor internal proficiency of the male and female students of the preparatory year at Hail University in order to find out ways that help  raise it.  The study adopted the descriptive approach and data analysis reveal that there is a large number of factors behind this problem as seen by the students. Results indicate that economic factors are major causes for the decline in internal proficiency of preparatory year students such as job opportunities for the unqualified. Social factors are also another cause for low internal proficiency which were evident in the absence of serious planning of students' free times and parents misunderstanding of their children's problems.  Findings also reveal academic factors as causes for the decline in internal proficiency such as admitting students to departments against their wishes, low English proficiency, and the gap between school and university study systems. Results also show that there some personal factors that contribute to the decline in internal proficiency of students of the preparatory year which are evident in some students' low motivation for learning and poor ambitions. Family factors are also a cause as seen in the occupation of some students with family needs and the family- member separation as a result of divorce. The researcher recommends establishing psychological guidance and counseling offices that help solve students psychological problems such as low self- esteem, introversion, and hesitation as well as directing parents not to discuss their problems in front of their children. In addition, directing students how they can make good use of their time, and introducing students to new departments to them, establishing a center for preparatory year counseling and finally, offering fund to support needy students to provide basic study requirements.
