description The number of immunocompromised patients has increased over the last decade as a consequence of aggressive chemotherapy regimens, expanded organ transplantations and rising incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. The severity and character of viral diseases have changed in these patients. Resistance to antiviral drugs has been noted among diverse groups of viruses but thus far has caused treatment failure primarily in immunosupressed patients. This article reviews clinical usage of antiviral agents, viral resistance and combination therapy.
