description Objectives:The current study aims to compare the parotid gland dimensions in patients with type II diabetes mellitus (DM) to control group of patients.Methods:46 patients with type II DM who are followed by our hospital’s Diabetes outpatient clinic, and 22 of otolaryngology Outpatient Clinic patients in whom diabetes, salivary gland pathology, alcoholism, anorexia nervosa, bulimia or autonomic nervous system dysfunction due to drugs have been excluded were included into the study. After a complete head and neck examination, all patients underwent bilateral parotid ultrasonography performed by a radiologist who was blinded to patients’ endocrinologic state. The anterior-posterior maximum length in the transverse axis (Tr), the superior-inferior maximum length in longitudinal axis (L) and the medial-lateral maximum length in longitudinal axis (ML) were measured. The results were compared in two groups using independent t test. Results:There were 46 patients in the DM group (17 men-29 women) and 22 patients (4 men-18 women) in the control group. There was no statistical difference between groups in terms of age, sex and body mass index. We failed to find any significant difference in Tr, L and ML measurements between the two groups. Conclusion:In conclusion, we suggest that in diabetic patients with sialadenosis one should not affiliate the condition with diabetes, and keep in mind the fact that there may be other etiological factors for sialadenosis.
