Summary:The third phase of technological advancement, also known as digitalization, involves significant changes at many levels such as society, business domain, organization and process. Accountants and auditors worldwide face an alert pace of digitalization which could potentially move the profession beyond its traditional paradigm. This study reviews the existing literature on accounting and auditing in the era of digitalization by using a structured literature review (SLR). Doing so, this paper critically discusses the research status in this area and gives directions for future research. Findings show that there is an increased interest for research in digitalization of accounting and auditing area, especially on big data and data analytics, but also on other subareas of digitalization such as cloud computing, blockchain, digital reporting and robotic process automation. However, research in this domain is in its infancy and yet there are still gaps in the literature that needs to be developed.
