Summary:<p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US">The article is devoted to the analysis of the role of cultural competence in higher education in Russia. The authors analyze the place of cultural competence in the Federal state educational standards of technical and humanitarian educational programs for bachelors and specialists. The authors assess the significance of cultural competence from the perspective of students and professors.</p><p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US"><span class="char-style-override-1">The objective</span> is to identify the content, functions and relevance of cultural competence in the higher professional education system.</p><p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US"><span class="char-style-override-1">Research methods</span>. The authors used the theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis. In a practical part of the research a sociological method of questionnaire survey in combination with the subsequent processing of statistical information was applied. Respondents were asked to rate some cultural competences in order of relevance for the performance of professional duties and to determine the presence of these qualities.</p><p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US"><span class="char-style-override-1">Results</span>. In general the respondents showed a high level of interest in the development of cultural competence. The main competence they emphasized is need and ability to study, desire for self-development. And exactly this competence they notice in the process of self-evaluation. The most part of respondents focused on a practical realization of the developed competences. In addition there is a pattern between the competence wording in educational standards and students’ assessment of its significance.</p><p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US"><span class="char-style-override-1">The scope of the results</span>. The results of the research can be applied in the system of higher professional education within the scope of educational activities, extracurricular activities, in professional counseling.</p>
