description The Portuguese society, at the turn of the century, was confronted with migratory dynamics that, although not new, presented some specifics, namely the coincidence of entries and exits, as well as new immigrants coming from Eastern European countries. In face of the theories then available, sociologist Maria Ioannis Baganha put forth a pioneering theoretical proposal in which Portugal presented itself as a “turntable” that receive immigrants and redistribute emigrants, due to its semi-peripheral condition and the processes of globalisation. In dialogue with this proposal, this text intends to analyse two specific migratory movements, health professionals and professional sportsmen, who, enter and leave Portugal nowadays, arguing about the permanence, or not, of Baganha’s original proposal.
