Description
Summary:The history of the Sicilian cart begins in the Sicilian trazzere of the second half of the eighteenth century, where it was used as a work tool, with shapes and dimensions that varied according to its use, being the vehicle that was best suited to crossing the dangerous “roads”. Over time, thanks to the collaboration of mastri, it was enriched with colours, images and writings, becoming a sort of book of stories, values and beliefs of the Sicilian people of the 19th century, extensively studied by various anthropologists. After an analysis of the various types of carts, this article proposes an interview with Gianfranco Fiore, Master in Painting of the Sicilian Cart, who specifies how, after the disappearance of the cart following the advent of motorized vehicles, popular painting returns at the beginning of the first decade of the 2000s to be a symbol of Sicilian identity, giving back to the world the variegated image of this people.
