Description
Summary:This article investigates the expulsion measures adopted against foreigners treated by the French administration as “refugees”. In order to shed light on the legal framework guiding the expulsion of refugees between 1832 and 1852, the article analyses administrative practices thanks to police records of several French departmental archives. The use of expulsion against people who came to France for political reasons or, at least, came under duress, gave rise to strong protests within the civil society, that was more and more sensitive during the first half of the nineteenth century to the fate of these foreigners of a particular kind.
