description As the study of the popular romance novel enters its fifth decade, a differential approach is slowly but surely replacing the older genre-wide perspectives adopted in earlier studies of the genre. This paper explores the repercussions of this transformation by comparing general claims about popular romance fiction made by Catherine Belsey in 1994 to a recent case study of Nora Roberts’ oeuvre. Concretely, the paper investigates whether Belsey’s central claim—that romance novels promise to represent romantic love as a force that resolves (post)modern tensions between body and mind but inevitably fail to do so—holds true for Nora Roberts’ massively popular oeuvre.
