description The identification of local structure composition may help understand the network construction law from a bottom-up view. Focusing on local structure, the network subgraph approach was applied to systematically analyze 3- to 7-node subgraphs in several transportation networks in China. Results show that the number of subgraph and forms increase as the subgraph scale increase, but the rate are different, which indicates the diversity of building blocks in transportation networks. Moreover, both the network subgraph rank can be divided into two kinds, each corresponding to one of the transport geographical networks and transport service networks. The two kinds reflect the unity of construction rule of geographical network or service network due to the similarity of the cost, technical and space constraints. The methods and results can be used as methods and standards in the planning, evaluation and optimization of transportation networks.
