description Coroplathy, a mass-produced craft produce by the extensive use of the technique of moulding, has been approached mainly through its ritual function in order to characterise cults and identify venerated deities. This research carried out in the Greek city of Metapontum (Basilicata, Italy) offers a new work perspective on this material. The combined study of all the metapontian discovery contexts of the archaic period and the spatial analysis of productions reveals the functional versatility of terracotta images, which could be offered in different sanctuaries. This leads us to reconsider the place of the iconographic approach applied to coroplathy in the attribution of metapontian cults of 7th and 6th centuries BC. This paper proposes to see in these images the expression of collective practices aimed to reinforce the cohesion of the civic community on a polis scale.
