| Summary: | Abstract Introduction This resource introduces students to basic concepts related to bone healing. The module is taught in the second half of the first year of our institution's undergraduate medical program. Students have previously completed courses in normal human structure (anatomy, histology). This resource was developed to allow students to independently learn content about bone healing prior to approaching clinical cases of fracture in class. Methods Students are provided with the module for independent study in advance of subsequent teaching about related clinical cases (fractures). The module is administered independently online. In our setting, 1 hour of scheduled curricular time is assigned for this task. The resource as presented here includes a PowerPoint presentation and a faculty guide. Completion of the module is encouraged by linkage to an in-class quiz drawing from the module's content, although this is optional. Results We do not track scores on the associated quiz; this resource is entirely formative. Students have the opportunity to post questions about the quiz on the course discussion board or to ask them at the subsequent face-to-face classroom session. Discussion It is helpful to schedule time for this module; however, it would also be reasonable to assign the module as homework for a related classroom session. The module is ideally administered to students with a foundation in normal bone histology. If students lack this preparation, some modification would be desirable to integrate the primary learning of these aspects into the module. More curricular time would be required if this were the case. The purpose of this module is to introduce undergraduate medical students to the principles of bone healing. It may also be of use to students in other prelicensure professional programs.
