Description
Summary:Methods of teaching and learning Academic Writing has been a heated phenomenon in research around the world during the last decades in which approaches of writing pruducts or writing process were in debates. However, few research studies have been conducted at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of HCMC OU to explore the drawbacks of teaching activities employed in the writing classrooms. Qualitative and quantitative analysis indicates that though the lecturers provided variety of writing practices to help students improve their writing skills, the writing topics delivered by the lecturers were not in students’ interests. Lecturer feedback focused much on the ‘surface’ of the writing. Also, the lecturers did not train students to know how to provide comments on each other’s essays, which might help the lecturers reduce the amount of work that they had to deal with big-size classes in the process of evaluating the students’ writings. Finally, almost no lecturer assigned students to do writing projects during the writing courses. The study points out some essential guidelines to help undergraduate students overcome their difficulties in learning Academic Writing.
