description This paper deals with the activities and the social condition of Roman businessmen, during the late Republic and the early Principate. It tries to answer this key question. To what extent the negotiatores shed light on Rome’s relation to the world between 70 B.C. and 73 A.D.? Moneylenders and long-distance traders were settled or sojourned overseas, where they sometimes formed organized communities. By this time, they have broadened their horizon, as the Roman Empire has expanded. Their social conditions were diverse, but they were quite well considered, because recognized as important agents of Rome’s influence and domination.
