description | ABSTRACT: Background: Thyroid diseases are considered of the most common and important endocrinological disorders that are associated with multiple deleterious effects. Osteopontin (OPN), a molecule first identified in osteoblasts, is a multifunctional protein involved in inflammation, cell adhesion & remodeling. It has been suggested that OPN plays a role in many diseases. Aim of the work: To assess the alteration of serum OPN in patients with several forms of thyroid dysfunction and the relation of OPN to body mass index (BMI) in those patients. Patients and methods: Study subjects were recruited from the endocrine outpatient clinic in Alexandria Main University Hospital. They were divided into; Group I: 25 hyperthyroid patients, Group II: 25 hypothyroid patients, and Group III: 25 healthy euthyroid subjects as a control group. Results: OPN was significantly higher in hyperthyroid group than in control group (mean 11.07 ± 2.87 µg/l Vs mean 6.50 ± 1.71 µg/l, p<0.001) while, it was significantly lower in hypothyroid group than in control group (mean 4.07 ± 1.30 µg/l Vs mean 6.50 ± 1.71 µg/l, p<0.001). OPN showed a significant positive correlation with TRAbs and a significant negative correlation with BMI. Conclusion: Direct relationship existed between OPN and thyroid hormones. OPN was significantly negatively correlated with BMI in patients with hyperthyroidism; hence OPN can be suggested to act as a mediator of BMI change in hyperthyroid patients. |
