description | This text enlightens the approach of the “argumentation in discourse” theory by showing how it is grounded in case studies built around a socio-discursive element calling for investigation, such as polemical discourse understood as an argumentative modality or the formula “delegitimization of Israel” analyzed in its argumentative uses. If the exploration is initiated by a research question and is framed by existing analytical procedures, it is however the examination of actual discourses at the level of macro and micro-analysis that allows for new questions and brings about a description of the functioning and social functions of the observed phenomenon. Sometimes, the empirical study calls for revisiting the theory in order to modify it or give it another inflection. The article is illustrated by published studies and by a micro-analysis of a specific use of “delegitimization of Israel” showing how attention to the materiality of language can throw light on a peculiar argumentative logic. |
