Description
Summary:Attempts were made by the first two governments of the Second Spanish Republic in exile to overthrow Franco's dictatorship by pressurising the Francoist secret services. The documents consulted for this article shed new and surprising light on Republican cabinet policy between 1946 and 1947. The discussions between Republican emissaries and high-ranking officers of the Francoist military suggest that even if the former were concerned about the risk of duplicity, they nonetheless believed that all had not been lost. This article will firstly present the factual content of the archives before setting out an analysis of the factors contributing to the failure of the Spanish Republican forces in exile.
