Summary:This article intends to analyze the construction and evolution of the Brazilian naval power in the transition between the first half and the second half of 19th century, considering the improvement and the rapid change of the naval war standards. We understand that the technological advance was responsible for the Brazilian naval hegemony in South Atlantic in the earlier stages during the war of the triple alliance, mainly after battle of Riachuelo. After this war the Brazilian Imperial Navy became one of the most respected in the world.
