Summary: | Some reflections on the sacrifices of pregnant animals to Athena, and more precisely to Athena Skiras, in her sanctuary at Phaleron (sacrifice accomplished by the genos of the Salaminioi), and to Athena Polias in Cos (a divinity closely associated with Zeus). These rare sacrifices of pregnant animals in honor of a goddess considered as a deity of war, very attached to her virginity, pose a series of questions related to the “kourotrophic” aspect of Athena, as also to the idea of a “metaphorical” maternity, as suggested by the cult of Athena “Mother” (Mêtêr) in Elis. |
