description | Genital ulcers may be located on the vagina, penis, anorectal or perineal areas with infectious or noninfectious etiology. Although sexually transmitted infections are a common cause of genital lesions, it is essential to consider nonvenereal disorders such as Behcet's syndrome, vesiculobullous disease, pyoderma gangrenosum, and malignant tumors in the differential diagnosis. Often, long-neglected benign and premalignant lesions which are hitherto unnoticed may undergo malignant transformation. Herein, we report a woman presenting with recurrent lower urinary tract complaints and a nonhealing ulcer over labia majora, eventually diagnosed with vulval squamous cell carcinoma arising from the underlying lesions of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. This case emphasizes the importance of early detection and vigilant management of such disorders which may often be asymptomatic and hence remain neglected. |
