Description
Summary:In recent decades, critical social science has been enclosed in an alternative which is sometimes enunciated as critical sociology vs sociology of critique, thus referring on the one hand to a Marxist perspective aiming at unveiling what domination masks and, on the other hand, to a pragmatist approach considering conversely the actors’ view as relevant. Taking the metaphor of the cavern as an analytic tool, this article argues that the social scientist is neither outside in a haughty radicalism or inside at the risk of complacent understanding, but on the threshold, where he or she has to move in and out. Based on a case-study about humanitarianism in the Israel-Palestine conflict, a proposition is made of a critical reflection both respectful of the social intelligence of the agents and demanding in terms of the intellectual freedom of the researcher.
