Summary:This paper presents a semi-automatic road extraction approach from aerial and satellite images for GIS (Geographic Information System) road network updating and capture. Basically, a generic road model is formulated using six basic road properties, which is solved sequentially by a dynamic programming algorithm. A few seed points describing coarsely the road need to be provided by the operator. The mathematical fundamentals of the method and experimental results are presented and discussed in this paper.
