description Migration is a complex phenomenon where several factors interfere; for instance, living conditions and employment opportunities in origin countries and destination places, as well as, the the migration tradition of a given community. Therefore, this article first presents a theoretical framework in order to explain the migratory flow from Northern Italy to Brazil (state of Espírito Santo), in particular, the case of the municipality of Santa Teresa, which was initially referred to as the Timbuy settlement, from1874-1875 onwards. Together with some bibliographical research, historical documents and field work supplements, this theoretical analysis is further developed with six interviews with descendants of immigrants from the oldest families settled and raised in Santa Teresa. According to our findings, it can be concluded that migration to Espirito Santo was encouraged by, push factors in northern Italy in the nineteenth century and, pull factors in the Espírito Santo state itself. Aid was provided by some intermediary institutions, signaling the migration culture in Italy and strong networks through which people were kept informed about their relatives and fellow citizens. Likewise, migration was itself the possibility to maintain strong family bonds and secure better financial prospects.
