Summary:Orthodontic tooth movement (e.g., rotation, distilitzation, torque) achieved with theactive anchorage appliance named transpalatal bars was proven. It is suggested thot the intrusive effect of the tongue on this appliance can change the axial inclination of the upper molars. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative intrusion effect of this appliance on the upper molars in an orthodontic patient group consisting of 21 cases having Angle class I, anterior openbite problem. The palatal clearance of the bar was planned to be 4-5 mm to increase the intrusion action on upper molarks that hos been normally recommended to be I-2 mm. The orthodontic records obtained at the end of the 6th months of active treatment showed a significant correction on the anterior openbite related to the intrusion of the molars and the decrease in their axial inclination. This appliance not causing important skeletal changes can be considered as a myofunctional appliance having remarkable dentoalveolar effects
