description Log-to-lumber converting processes with subsequent cutting into blanks is one of the important processing stages in industries where solid wood is used for the products manufacture. Therefore, the study of wood consumption at these stages is relevant in today’s production conditions. The results of experimental studies are obtained on the beech log input for producing rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and qualitative characteristics in production conditions. The step-by-step operational beech log input for obtaining dry rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and qualitative characteristics have been investigated, in particular, during the implementation of the following processing stages: sawing the wood into unedged lumber; rip-sawing unedged lumber into separate parts of wood, the cross-section of which corresponds to the cross-section of the blanks; drying of damp parts of the wood; cutting dry parts of the wood along the length, while cutting out unacceptable wood defects, into rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and quality characteristics. The dimensions of the beech log, which was sawn during the experimental studies, were following: diameter in the middle of its length – from 32 cm to 86 cm, log length – from 2.9 m to 3.2 m. The qualitative composition of the sawing log in the experimental studies: quality class A – 10%; quality class B – 20%; quality class C – 50%; quality class D – 20%. In the process of experimental studies, unedged lumber with a thickness of 81 mm and 45 mm was obtained which was further cut into wood parts with a cross-section of 45 × 81 mm. The analysis of the results of the experimental studies made it possible to find that the average step-by-step operational indexes of the beech log input for obtaining dry rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and qualitative characteristics for various processing stages are of the following values: beech log input for obtaining damp unedged lumber – 1.243 m3/m3; consumption of damp unedged lumber in case of length cutting into damp parts of wood – 1.450 m3/m3; consumption of damp wood parts for obtaining dry wood parts – 1.173 m3/m3; consumption of dry parts of wood, in case of cutting them along the length with cutting out unacceptable wood defects, into rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and quality characteristics – 1.101 m3/m3. The determined values of the beech log input for obtaining dry rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and qualitative characteristics under the experimental conditions are in the range of 1.955 ... 2.816 м3/м3. The use of the results of the step-by-step operational beech log input to obtain dry rough blanks of different lengths with specified dimensional and qualitative characteristics for various processing stages will allow developing appropriate consumption rates that are applicable in production conditions.
