Description
Summary:The writings of the Roman agrimensores are not only a set of technical data about all questions concerning land organization. They are marked by the ideology of victory which is a fundamental element of Roman identity. The agrimensores support that ideology and contribute, at their own level and to the extend of their ability, to its expansion and promotion. To that end, they resort to the etymologies of certain technical terms of their ars. They keep up a valorizing and purifying attitude towards the past (antiqui, maiores nostri). They expunge the horrors of the Civil wars, which enables them to show Rome avoiding the curse of domestic feuds. They also strengthen Roman identity by evoking, at least implicitly, the indispensable otherness, that of a world that stay outside an ideal organisation of the land. They make of that ratio pulcherrima a code and guarantor of Romanity which Isidorus of Sevilla will still intend to illustrate in Book XV of his Etymologies.
