Summary:The epidemiological relationship among nosocomial strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which were isolated during 1997 and 1999 period had been evaluated by using both randomly amplified polymerase chain reaction - RAPD-PCR as genotyping method and antibiotic susceptibility patterns as phenotyping method. Nosocomial isolates showed 18 phenotypic groups and none of these groups were predominant in a certain period of time. Most of the isolates showed different genotypic patterns and the strains with identical RAPD patterns displayed in seven groups. Although the isolation period of the strains in some RAPD groups seemed to be longlasting (15 months); the strains in certain groups were isolated in a very short period of time (1 month). There was no correlation between RAPD and antibiotic susceptibility typing methods. Some of the isolates in the same phenotypic group, exhibited different RAPD patterns. An outbreak due to this microorganism did not occur during the study period. As a conclusion, this study indicated that presence of many different clones of P. aeruginosa and predominancy of some of them in certain units in our hospital between 1997 and 1999.
