Description
Summary:This study examined community-based drought adaption measures in a rural community in South Africa's Limpopo Province. The goal of this research was to document the community's perceptions of drought, its effect on their livelihood, and their adaptation efforts. Data was collected from 160 semi-structured interviews with community members. Drought is perceived as many years of persistent rainfall scarcity. Water, subsistence food cultivation, and livestock husbandry are all key livelihood resources that have been negatively impacted by the drought. The primary method for drought adaptation is to alter traditional livelihood activities such as subsistence crop and livestock production, that resulted in most community members employed by government and local retailers to provide food for their families. Water is provided by collection from natural springs, and purchased from local suppliers. The community makes use of a range of adaptation strategies, both short-term indigenous and long-term contemporary. While short-term plans describe the adaptation measures described by participants, the long-term initiatives are being developed by the government and other organizations.
