description This research was borne out of the observation that the Breton language has a visible presence in the regional political landscape. Breton is rolled out as a campaign theme in the electoral game at every local election. The primary research area examined what it meant for a state representative to speak in a language other than that used in the exercise of power in France. The aim was to understand the representations that these politicians who expressed themselves in Breton had of the Breton language. The use of Breton, which was once a common language in politics, is now purely symbolic. While there is a consensus among Breton political staff that the Breton language must be protected, it is no longer used as a language of communication (as evidenced by some participants in the study). The research methodology was a field survey based on ethnographic interviews.
