Summary: | I illustrate one of Aline Rousselle’s great hypotheses : the Christian break made it possible to revive disappearing or obsolete Roman practises. This principle is applied to the history of the expression voti reus, borrowed from Virgil by saint Augustine to establish the Christian notion of vow (for the vow of chastity in marriage), basing it on the idea of “good debt” and rediscovering the republican idea of citizens’commitment to a justice treating them like subjects, not objects. |
