Description
Summary:Ever since Đổi mới, the arrival of capitalist market forms, and the evolution of corresponding social relations, Hà Nội has undergone a dramatic upheaval. After revolutions, wars and the failure of centralized economy, we are currently witnessing a radical change from pre-modernity to the modernity of a globalized age. The consequences are perceptible when strolling through Hà Nội’s streets and talking to the capital’s inhabitants. This article attempts to demonstrate that the process of transformation is not as random or chaotic, as it may seem, but that it follows a logic that can be historically categorized. The posh new villas on West Lake and their upwardly mobile owners represent new, syncretic) values; the origins of family businesses are carefully hidden; the individual activities in the 36 guild streets of the Old Quarter; these are all testaments to change that can deciphered and interpreted like a book opened onto the very face of the city. From a center of professional and everyday social interactions, the city is turning into a venue of consumption. Urban space is tending more towards clean, organized, and controlled spaces while its inhabitants are subjected to new logics of control.
