Summary:Practicing artistic gymnastic requires strenght, velocity, and female gymnasts have to possess statural and weight qualities that could impair health. What are benefits and costs for children and adolescents in practicing intensive gymnastic? Female teenagers gymnasts from National and International standart have, on average, reduced height, weight and fat mass (respectively, -12 cm, -12 kg, -25 %), delayed menarche (1,5 year) and bone age (1 year). However pubere gymasts bone density is increased in spite of caloric restriction and oligo-oramenorrhea. Dietary intakes are low (1500-1700 kcal/d), for some gymnasts, insufficient intake is very important. Lipid and glucid percentage are satisfying (30% and 50%) but protid percentages are too high (20%). Two-thirds gymnasts are affected by driving for thinness, but they are not compulsive eater, not low self-esteem as bulimic patients. Some studies show a delayed psychological development.
