Summary: | The contemporary South African novelist Nadine Gordimer is well known as one of the pioneers of Anti -Apartheid literature. Her works can be categorized in two groups; the first written during the Apartheid government and the next composed after its demise. The Pickup (2001) is in the second category. The present article studies this novel as a reflection of the post -Apartheid South African society. The transformation in the value system of South Africa after the overthrow of Apartheid regime and Mandela’s rise to power is the focal subject of this article. This alteration is depicted in the union of a white South African woman and an illegal immigrant. The novel illustrates the deconstruction of all long held binary oppositions of the South African society during the dominance of Apartheid. The most important of these binary oppositions is the one between “self” and “other”. It is discussed that after Apartheid “other” plays a crucial role in the redefinition of the “self”. |
