subject based on the context of the columns. However, the number of studies that analyze column writing as an occupation is limited. The aim of this research is to contribute to the existing gap on the
subject.
For this purpose, the subject matter of this study has been determined as the development process
of column writing in Turkey. Within this scope, the basic attributes of column writing and its
transformation have been analyzed based on Takvim-i Vekayi, the first official newspaper of the
Ottoman Empire, and Tercüman-i Ahval, the first private newspaper.
The texts point out the conclusion that column writing in Turkey is effected by political and social
developments. Additionally, it is observed that column writing experiences the discussions of
simplification of language in order to access the public in different eras. As the administrative style
and publishing policy of newspapers have transformed due to the changing political and economic
orientations, column writing too was subject to this change. In sum, by looking at the subject from a
holistic perspective, founding a basis for column writing in Turkey within its historical context is one
of the conclusions of this research. |
