Serum IL-1β levels and its influencing factors in patients with postherpetic neuralgia

Objective: To investigate the serum IL-1β levels and its influencing factors in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Methods: A total of 145 patients with PHN and 40 healthy controls were enrolled in our hospital from January 2014 to January 2019. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was...

description Objective: To investigate the serum IL-1β levels and its influencing factors in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Methods: A total of 145 patients with PHN and 40 healthy controls were enrolled in our hospital from January 2014 to January 2019. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect serum IL-1β levels. Single factor and logistic regression analyses were used to determine the influencing factors of serum IL-1β levels in patients with PHN. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between serum IL-1β levels and VAS scores. Results: The serum IL-1β levels in PHN group were significantly higher than that in the controls [ (20.18±5.63) pg/mL vs (10.36±1.19) pg/mL, t=10.94, P<0.01)]. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that age (OR=3.541) and VAS scores of acute stage (OR=6.237) in PHN patients were related to the serum IL-1β levels. There was a significant positive correlation between serum IL-1β levels and VAS scores, with the correlation coefficient of r=0.64(P<0.05). Conclusions: The serum IL-1β levels in patients with PHN increase significantly, and IL-1β may be involved in the pathogenesis of PHN. IL-1β can reflect the severity of pain in patients with herpes zoster in acute stage.
