Description
Summary:This paper is concerned with the role of the first language (L1) and the second language (L2) in process encoding in L1 and L2 in narratives produced by highly advanced Russian-speaking learners of French, who can be characterized as nearly bilingual. Our analysis is based on differences between the tense-aspect systems of Russian and French and on internal properties of predicates (Vendler’s [1967] typology). The results of the analysis demonstrate the influence of L1 on temporal construal in the expression of activities in L2, as well as the influence of L2 on the choice between different types of predicates in L1. With this study, we provide new elements to cross-linguistic research in the domain of tense and processes.
