Description
Summary:The European Parliament shows specific features that differentiate it from national parliaments because of its nature and functions. As it is the only European institution directly elected by citizens it has been in the centre of the debates about the “democratic deficit” of the European Union. In fact, even though its powers have increased over the years, its social perception continues to be negative. The European Parliament has some representative, normative, fiscal and accountable peculiarities which prevent it from being the key decision-maker in the European Union system. One of the possible solutions to overcome its deficiencies would be to foster the politicization of the European Union options by means of giving a protagonist role to Euro-parties – currently virtual but with potential future. The political competition and the institutionalization of the role of an opposition can be the factors that could not only revitalize the European Parliament but also contribute correcting its democratic deficit.
