description Social exclusion has always been part of African-descendent people’s history in Brazil. Presently, it occurs in a disguisedly brutal and socially invisible manner. The quilombola communities – the typical general situation of the African-descendent people in Brazil – consist of peasant populations descending from African slaves that have been integrated partially and marginally to Brazilian society. This paper analyzes the fight for the territorial conquest of the Poça quilombola community, located in the Ribeira River Valley. The community of Poça relates to wider processes than the ones that are possible to observe inside the community. Both the process of mobilization of work and the process of production of capital determine the struggle for the possession of the land, as well as the permanence of the individuals.
