Description
Summary:The general Franco’s dictatorship lasted nearly forty years in Spain (1939-1975). He rose to power during an armed uprising (Alzamiento) after a bloody civil war, which was seen as a heroic act and a crusade (Cruzada). The general took the opportunity to climb to the supreme power: he held concurrently the titles of “Caudillo of Spain” by the grace of God and “Generalissimo of the land army, air force and navy”. Franco’s dictatorship was based upon the Army to guarantee order and the Church to teach Christian morality in the whole country. The control of the strong Army and the Church, two cornerstones of the system, provided him stability and unprecedented longevity in the contemporary history of Spain.
