| description | First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis is a common procedure that has several fixation options well established in literature. The purpose of this study was to discuss the results and patient outcomes of first MTPJ arthrodesis using a dual plating fixation technique. Retrospective analysis was performed of patients (N=4) who underwent dual plating for MTPJ arthrodesis with a single surgeon in this study. The mean follow-up period was 13.75 (ranging from 12-18) months. Complications occurred in three of the four patients and included hardware failure, non-union and post-operative pain. These outcomes suggest that the reported technique may not be an acceptable construct for arthrodesis of the first MTPJ and further research is needed to ensure decreased rates of non-union and hardware failure. |
