description | The Galicia-Volyn Chronicle reflected the actions of three generations of Romanoviches. The assessments by ancient Russian scribes of the actions of certain rulers are not accidental. They often indicate changes in the organization of chronicle work. In relation to the Volyn Chronicle of the second half of the 13th century, the figure of Lev Danilovich, who owned large landholdings after his father’s death, is indicative. His characterization is very contradictory. If in the Galician and the initial part of the Volyn Chronicle the prince appears in the positive light, then during the reign of his cousin Vladimir Vasilkovich in Vladimir Volynsky, Lev Danilovich and his son Yuri appear as absolutely negative figures, endowed with many unfavorable qualities. At the end of the Volyn Chronicle, an unexpected change in the assessment of Lev Danilovich is noticeable. The chronicler again assesses him positively and praises his actions. The data of chronicle personology testify to the consolidated nature of the Volyn Chronicle, which reflected several contradictory testimonies of scribes who served as their pen to several descendants of Roman Mstislavich. The final part of the Volyn Chronicle probably reflected fragments of the text created by the chronicler Mstislav Danilovich, who was interested in good relations with his older powerful brother. |
