Summary: | “There are dwarfs in this world” (and in translation). On an English translation of Maria Konopnicka’s The Brownie Scouts
The article is devoted to an English translation of a famous and well-known Polish story O krasnoludkach i o sierotce Marysi by Maria Konopnicka (1895). The translation was published in 1929 by an English writer Kate Żuk-Skarszewska; its title, The Brownie Scouts, emphasizes the story of the dwarfs rather than the parallel between the history of the dwarfs intertwined with that of a little orphan girl Marysia. The article offers a comparative analysis of the source text and the English translation. Theoretical aspects of children literature in translation are shortly discussed. A special attention was given to Żuk-Skarszewska’s modifications, among which reductions and amplifications are often used.
