description Based on an observation of a Chinese Army hospital ship in the South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, this article explores new dimensions of global health as a mixture of health, humanitarianism and politics. This huge temporary infrastructure that brings together medical experts from the Chinese army and people from Vanuatu affirms the context of post-colonial dependency on external aid. An ethnography of the situations fostered by the presence of the hospital ship helps to understand the functioning of the only public hospital of the capital Port Vila. The hospital’s multitude of projects combine international, transnational and national logics. Three aspects were retained in order to analyze the Chinese intervention: the important function of the visual aspect, the temporal dimension with the question of the long-term influence and impact, and the geopolitical perspective.
