Thus it is with Paul’s imprecation against the Jews in the first epistle to the Thessalonicians often considered as the birth certificate of a “Christian anti-Semitism”. Yet, the method of the parallels establishes that the strength and scope of a word or an image are to be discovered only in connection with their original setting. The interest in interweaving various documentary approaches with exegetic analysis is therefore obvious when dealing with a polemical text imbued with a very strong ideological connotation, whether one has to do with manuscripts and the history of the text or the sociological or cultural contextualization, by using apocryphal literature and the inscriptions. |
