Summary: | This study examines why and how Early Empire Greek ≪ thinkers ≫, fairly close to one another in time (from the second half of the Ist century to the IInd century A.D.), rewrite heroic models. Epictetus, Dion of Pruse and Maximus of Tyr can be compared because they are pedagogues and because there exist between them intellectual affinities which justify their bringing together : Epictetus and Dion, who were contemporaries would have been pupils of the Roman stoic Musonius Rufus ; Maximus seems to have been influenced by Dion’ s thought. The four heroes mostly to be used by them are Ulysses, Agamemnon, Achilles and Heracles. We analyse on the one hand the reception of those mythical figures by Early Empire intellectuals and the pedagogy of the latter on the other hand. |
