description This article analyses an ensemble of interdisciplinary research efforts, grounded mainly in science and technology studies (STS), which – based upon Geoffrey Bowker and Susan Leigh Star’s seminal work – seeks to study informational and digital infrastructures according to their “materiality”, arguing that there is a need to overcome an understanding of infrastructures as purely physical. The article shows the usefulness of this perspective for the researcher seeking to use the “infrastructure” notion as a heuristic tool in order to understand the governance of digital information and networks, the Internet first and foremost.
