Summary:The article considers the possibility of prescribing anticoagulant therapy to elderly patients with atrial fibrillation in various clinical situations. It presents key data from randomized clinical trials for the safe and effective use of direct thrombin inhibitors in elderly patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, acute cerebrovascular event/ transient ischaemic attack, and patients with concomitant chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus.
