Summary: | Work-Related Musculo-Skeletal Disorders (WRMSDs) are multifactorial occupational conditions. In order to improve their prevention, a multidisciplinary approach is needed. A multidisciplinary research project using ergonomics and clinical activity was conducted among gravediggers in a major French city as part of a programme aimed at preventing WRMSDs. This combination was achieved through the ergonomic and clinical observation of manual digging. Afterwards, each researcher tried other ways of finding out about the gravediggers’ work. More generally, the multidisciplinary project enabled gravediggers to continue to evaluate their work and find out more about techniques, while their managers took a fresh look at the concept of sustainable prevention of WRMSDs. After the research project, the city council decided to examine new ways of providing permanent support for preventing WRMSDs among gravediggers.
